Evan stood in the dimly lit office. His hands clenched into fists at his sides as he stared at the computer screen displaying the alarming figures. His bakery’s stocks had dropped by four percent overnight, with multiple locations experiencing last-minute cancellations or delays in orders. Concerned emails from bakers flooded his inbox, questioning if their locations were in danger of closing.

“Can you believe this?” Evan asked, his voice tight with frustration. He couldn’t fathom how Harry’s appearance on a single podcast could cause so much damage to his brand. People were always waiting for rising stars to fall, and when Harry labeled him an awful person, they were all too eager to believe it. Evan knew he had to repair his reputation before things spiraled further out of control.

“Unfortunately, I can,” replied his PR manager, Simon, grimacing as he scanned through the latest headlines on his phone. “Florence has become Harry’s mouthpiece overnight. She’s bringing up negative stories about you and Wanda.”

“Like what?” Evan’s jaw tightened, preparing for the worst.

“Take a look at this.” Simon handed Evan the phone, showing a video of Wanda fleeing the market after talking to her uncle. Florence claimed it was evidence to support the rumor that Evan’s bride-to-be suffered paranoid delusions.

Evan felt anger surge through him, his heart pounding like it wanted to leap from his chest.

“This is ridiculous,” Evan spat. “Uncle Nicholas confronted Wanda and upset her. We have the restraining order.” He paced the room, running a hand through his wavy blonde hair.

“But the video’s worth more to most folks,” Simon pointed out, “the market only has cameras at a few key locations, and where Wanda faced her uncle wasn’t one of them. Fleeing the market, Wanda sadly got caught on camera. Along with Nicholas’s reunion with Wanda when she was friendly with him. Whatever negative confrontation happened between them occurred where there were no cameras.”

“Leave it to me, Evan,” Simon assured him. “I’ll get other newscasters to cover our perspective and schedule a short interview for you. We can use the court case as leverage, but remember, most folks are less trusting of the law nowadays.”

“Fine,” Evan agreed reluctantly, knowing that Simon was right. He also knew that none of it would make up for losing Florence. She had been the face of multiple interviews involving him and his bakery empire. Her turning on him caused irreparable damage. Harry was determined to take Evan down.
